It was our last day in Greece when we decided to head to the last metro station called Pireas the port, some may even say it's completely different city than Athens and I would totally agree. The Pireas had its own town centre and completely different mood going on. Either way, I totally loved this place, and I will definitely come back once more if I have a chance.
It took us to take a metro ride for 15min and then we got off, went around the terminals and the ships and ferries that were taking off. (The port was huge). I felt suddenly though that I am craving for some coffee, therefore we headed to Starbucks nearby, which was basically on the coastline and the view was magnificent. As I was watching all those people passing by me, who most of them were Greeks as I didn't see so many foreigners hanging around, they were still different. I felt like they were more relaxed and smiley than regular Athenians. And the nature and surroundings were just breathtaking, I took so many pictures.
Before heading to Pireas, I forgot to mention, we went to the Benaki Museum. It really left me a good impression. We spent there like 2-3 hours as there were many expositions. In the Museum they expose items from Greek culture and history, you follow the numbers that lead to different halls and you can literally see all the periods from Greek history from the ancient mythological times to the modern ones. It was a really nice experience, that was followed by me buying postcards in the museum shop and then taking a break at the cafe terrace. Sergei got beer for himself accompanied with some chips and I got myself a Greek frappe. (Pictures below)
After the Museum we headed to one famous restaurant which also sold meat and cheese and various spices. So we ordered a few Greek dishes to try, but before that they brought us some meat slices with cheese and fresh bread to snack on. From the starters we got some Dolmadakia, which is basically stuffed grape leaves with rice and yogurt sauce on side, another starter was a mash of eggplant flavoured with different exotic spices, which had such a rich taste. For the mains we got some kind of beef stew with veggies and at lasts we ordered some anchovies for the fish dish. Oh and just before we left the waiter brought us some dessert and said it's on the restaurant. It was really pleasant to hear. They brought us some carrot marmalade with greek yogurt, which is a traditional Greek dessert supposingly. Overall, it was a bomb of different flavours and tastes but all the dishes were worth trying as they represent the real Greek cuisine and it's not something you eat on daily basis. In other words, it was an unforgettable experience for me.
