Athens, Greece

Day 2 in Athens: Temple of Zeus

So as we landed in Athens for the first day we didn't really want too much of everything, as we know that Athens is the historical centre of European culture, there is so many thing about this place that we heard or knew or were looking forward to seeing, that's why we felt like first day will be just perfect for us to get around with hotness (when we flew from Vilnius it was like +10 degrees, in July!!!) and as we landed in Athens, the +37 hit us hard. But we didn't really want to sit in one place either, and wanted to start getting to know this city and therefore guys, never do this, but we chose the most touristy (and crowded) place for us to look around:D Which was the Plaka region. (Check the first day in Greece for Plaka photos and my first look). For those who don't know Plaka is one of the most beautiful places in Athens, located right below the Acropolis and it's just many little narrow colorful streets as well as all those costy restaurants and souvenir shops. It's great for hanging around and shopping, but not on your first day here!! So we failed. Some stranger recommended us one restaurant there where they sell good fish and all the greek food and we went there right away, and later as we found out the rating of this place was just awful and the food was okay, but I got annoyed by the lady, who tried her russian skills to get us order everything and she just never stopped talking and talking and it just got to my nerves. So guys be careful with the first restaurant choice , cause it will give you the first, the unforgettable experience. And I am not saying the food was bad, it's just that usually I choose my dining places thoroughly as I like to enjoy the authentic cuisines and the hottest spots that are around. And I really wanted for the first time to be spontaneous but as you see, it just never works for me.The second day, though wasn't that much of a disappointment, however there is more to it.  We decided to check our first temple so we headed to Zeus, which was located in the center and therefore was convenient to get to. The other one, of Poseidon was located on the seashore and it would take hours of ride by metro and later by bus. Being newbyes we didn't want to waste that much time on driving therefore headed to Zeus. So basically despite being temple, it was just ruins that was left, which was still magnificent and worth seeing, however you can see it from far away from the outside (as it was fenced). We did get allured to take some pictures from up close and therefore paid 6 euro to get inside, however there was still a fence inside which separated us like by 6 meters and photos didn't came out as we planned:D but oh well.. can't help trying to get a better shot. At the evening we decided to dine at one random greek-themed restaurants in Psiri. (being so spontaneous in this trip). We ordered some souvlaki kalamaki, which is basically meat skewers and some pita bread or fries on side and thadziki sauce. Oh and we got some greek salad as well to share, as it's a must while being in Athens. (photos below) Sergei got some pined beer and I did some posing (again photos below). We took a stroll after filling our stomaches and we headed to the Monastiraki square, had to pass Plaka again, but hey everything is in reach by foot, which is just great! Rooftop bar in the A for Athens Hotel is the best location, I think for taking pictures of the square, or just getting a drink and enjoying a view. It is perfectly fine though to go there just to take photos, the staff is super friendly and understanding.I was not sure guys, to share or not to share photos from the 3rd day, but at the end I think it's better to leave those for another post not to overwhelm you with the beauty of this city. So, guys, stay tuned as there is some Greek post ahead. Waiting for your feedback.
